There is an old saying that a person should have at least one collection in his lifetime. My granpa believed in this. His choice: pens for some reason. I knew all about this collection when I was rummaging through his stuff in the attic and found a quill safely kept inside a box. It was well kept. It had a little note beside it. Apparently, it was a gift from an old friend of his.

This discovery gave me an idea. Why not I give him something on Veterans Day? He would be surprised. Nobody ever gave anything to someone on that holiday. I plan to help him augment his collection by giving him logo promotional pens. I’m sure he already has some of it, but I don’t think he has one like what I will give him.

I told all about my plan to my parents. They really liked the idea. Then I convinced them to also give him logo promotional ballpoint pens on the same day.

On the 11th of November, we asked (or forced) him to go with us and have dinner at a restaurant downtown. Right after lunch, we gave him our gifts. The look on his face said everything. He then told us some stories about his life as a soldier in Vietnam, and how he started his collection. It was a bit ironic, because his first ‘collection’ was a couple of logo promotional high tech pens.

That was a good one. Good plan, better execution. The day could not have gone any better.
